Riding the White Rim Trail in one day is an epic endurance challenge that takes you through some of the most stunning and remote landscapes of Canyonlands National Park in Utah. The loop is approximately 100 miles, mostly on rugged dirt roads, with over 7,000 feet of climbing—a serious test of both fitness and mental toughness.
Early Start – Most riders begin before sunrise to maximize daylight. The route can take anywhere from 8 to 14+ hours, depending on fitness, conditions, and stops.
Brutal Climbs & Fast Descents – Right out of the gate, riders descend Shafer Trail, a breathtaking drop into the canyon. The ride ends with the brutal Mineral Bottom climb, a long, steep slog after 80+ miles in the saddle.
Scenic but Exposed – The route winds through towering cliffs, deep canyons, and vast desert landscapes, offering jaw-dropping views but zero shade and often harsh winds.
Logistics Matter – With no water sources along the route, support vehicles are common. If unsupported, riders must carry all their water and nutrition, which is a serious weight and planning challenge.
The Final Push – By the time you reach Horsethief Bottom and begin the last massive climb, exhaustion sets in. This final section is a mental battle as much as a physical one.
The White Rim in a day (WRiAD) is a bucket-list ride for ultra-endurance mountain bikers and gravel riders who want to push their limits. Riders should be prepared for heat, sand, headwinds, and long hours in the saddle, but those who complete it are rewarded with an unmatched sense of accomplishment and some of the most incredible landscapes in the country.
We'll meet as a group in American Fork Canyon for a physical day in the backcountry. With a tough climb up and two timed segments down.
